Welcome to Curriculum

Welcome to Curriculum and Instruction (C&I),

The C&I team continues to work with our D428 teachers at all grade levels to align curriculum and materials to the Common Core State Standards, Next Generation Science Standards, and the Illinois Social Science Standards.  Teachers meet in small groups to continue to build and refine units of study.  The current best practice is that creating and refining curriculum is a process that will never be completed.  The rationale for this is that as educators, we must continually be reflecting and refining our practice to ensure that we are meeting all students’ academic and social and emotional needs.

Assessment is an essential component of C&I.  As educators we must be checking for understanding at all times to make sure that our students are learning as we are teaching.  Assessments can range from an informal exit slip to PARCC (a federally mandated assessment).  The majority of assessments that are given in the classroom should inform instruction, meaning that the data collected from the assessment should tell the teacher whether or not she/he needs to re-teach or move ahead with instruction.  There are a few assessments that are not meant to inform instruction, but to capture a moment in time for a student, which is what PARCC/ACT/SAT do.

Our bilingual and English as a Second Language (ESL)  teachers work with our general education and special education teachers to provide the best program possible for our bilingual and EL students.  The bilingual and ESL teachers work collaboratively with our general education teachers as they work to refine units of study for our students.

Technology is a tool to support teaching and learning in and out of the classroom.  Students in grades 3-12 have chromebooks that have been assigned to them like a textbook would be.  The goals of the Curriculum Technology Initiative are to teach our students to become problem solvers, critical thinkers, collaborators, inquirers of knowledge, and to take ownership of their learning.  D428 teachers are changing their professional practice to enhance student engagement, student ownership of learning, collaboration, and challenging students to problem solve and inquiry.  Instructional Coaches are supporting teaching and learning in classrooms through modeling, coaching , co-teaching, observations, and reflecting with teachers.

The C&I team has two great support personnel; Marianne Buehler (C&I Administrative Assistant) and Wendy Kuryliw (Systems Operator).  Marianne is our grant (Title I, Title II, Title III, LIP/LEPS) go to person.  Wendy is our Skyward and Student Information System(SIS) expert.

The C&I team will continue to collaboratively support our teachers and administrators as we move forward with implementation of best practices in teaching and learning.
